Around 6,000 whooper swans have arrived in the coastal city of Rongcheng in Weihai, Shandong province to spend the winter, the city’s information office reported.

The swans migrate annually from Siberia, the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and China’s northeastern regions and stay for around five months at the bay in Rongcheng, making it China’s largest winter habitat for whooper swans.
Rongcheng Swan Lake, also known as Moon Lake, is located in chengshanwei Town, Rongcheng City and at the easternmost end of Jiaodong Peninsula. It is the largest Swan wintering habitat in China and one of the four Swan lakes in the world. The average water depth of Rongcheng Swan Lake is 2 meters, but the deepest is only 3 meters. A large number of small fish, shrimp and plankton are bred and inhabited in the lake. From early winter to April of the second year, tens of thousands of wild swans travel thousands of miles, calling friends from Siberia and Inner Mongolia.
